This is the argument. Most hunters shooting past their own driveway should be on a 4mm shaft, and most of them aren't. They're on a 5mm or a 6mm because that's what the shop had on the wall, or because a 6mm is fifteen bucks cheaper a dozen, or because nobody ever gave them a reason to care. Here's the reason.
What we're actually talking about
Diameter classes get muddy, so let me anchor it. A 6mm shaft — think Easton 6.5 Bloodline, most factory arrows, anything sold at a big-box store — runs around .246" outside. A 5mm — Axis 5mm, a lot of the “hunting” premium shafts — sits near .204". A true 4mm — Easton 4mm Axis Long Range, Victory RIP XV, Black Eagle Spartan, the K2 Sawtooth 4mm, Sirius Apollo — is down around .166" of inside bore, skinnier than a pencil lead by comparison.
That's not a spec-sheet flex. Every millimeter you pull off the diameter does three things that matter when there's an animal in front of you.
The three reasons, in order of how much they matter
Wind. This is the big one and nobody talks about it enough. A skinny shaft has less surface for a crosswind to shove on. At 20 yards you'll never see it. At 60, in a real 10 mph quarter-wind, the difference between a fat 6mm and a 4mm can be the width of a whole vital zone. I watched this play out on a prairie two Octobers ago. My buddy Cole was shooting 6.5mm Injexions, I was on 4mm Axis. Same bow speed within a few fps, same 60-yard pin. He drifted a foot left of the plate. I caught the left edge. He blamed his release. It wasn't his release. It was the fifteen extra thousandths of an inch the wind had to push against for sixty yards.
Penetration. Less shaft diameter means less friction as the arrow passes through hide, muscle, and the far-side hole. Ashby beat this drum for decades and he was right about this part — a narrower shaft behind the broadhead follows the wound channel cleaner instead of dragging the whole diameter through tissue. On a hard quartering shot into an elk, that's the margin between a pass-through and an arrow buried to the fletching.
FOC and mass placement. This one's sneaky. A 4mm shaft is heavier per inch than a 6mm of the same spine because the wall is thicker to hold the stiffness in a smaller tube. So you get more total mass down low, and you get it in a shaft that takes a stainless half-out or a brass insert without ballooning your outside diameter. You build FOC without building a lawn dart. That's a better arrow, full stop.
The objections, and why they mostly fold
“They're too expensive.” A dozen premium 4mm shafts runs maybe twenty, thirty bucks more than a dozen mid-tier 6mm. You're going to shoot that dozen for two or three seasons. Spread the cost over the hunts and it's a rounding error against your tag, your fuel, your bow.
“The components are impossible to find.” This was true in 2016. It is not true now. Every serious brand makes half-outs, collars, and inserts for the 4mm platform, and the aftermarket — Iron Will, Ethics, Podium — supports it deep. The ecosystem grew up. The objection didn't keep pace.
“They're fragile.” The thin wall myth. A modern 4mm carbon shaft with the right insert system is not meaningfully weaker in the field than a 6mm. What breaks arrows is hitting another arrow, hitting a rock, or a bad spine choice flexing them past their limit. Diameter isn't the story there.
Who actually shouldn't switch
I'm not a zealot. If you are a pure treestand whitetail hunter who has never taken a shot past 25 yards and never will, a good 5mm or even a well-tuned 6mm is fine. The wind advantage evaporates that close. The penetration advantage is real but your 25-yard shot on a broadside deer wasn't hurting for penetration to begin with. Shoot what you have, tune it well, and don't let anyone shame you off it.
Everybody else — anyone who practices to 60, anyone who hunts open country, anyone chasing elk or mule deer or antelope, anyone who's ever lost an arrow to wind and told themselves it was their form — you're leaving performance on the table with a fat shaft. Switch.
