Every Tool in The Forge — and the Two Shots It's Built Around

People ask me why The Forge has so many tabs. Fair question. Most arrow "calculators" online are one box: type in your draw weight, get a spine number, good luck. The Forge is a dozen tools because building an arrow and then hitting something with it are not the same job, and neither one is a single step.

I build for two shots, and if you shoot a compound you know both of them intimately. The first is the short shot — a whitetail at 22 yards, a 3D target on a downhill lane, the shot that's over in a second and punishes any hesitation. The second is my favorite thing in archery: the long send. Steel at 80, a paper face at 100, the shot where the arrow is in the air long enough to think about, and every tiny error in your setup has time to grow into a miss. Those two shots ask opposite things from your gear, and every tool in The Forge exists to serve one, the other, or the seam between them.

Builder — where the arrow becomes real

The Builder is home base, and it's the tool everything else feeds off of. You pick a shaft, set your cut length, hang a point on the front, choose an insert or collar, a nock, your vanes and a wrap — and the Builder shows you, live, what you just built. Total weight. FOC. Dynamic spine on a gauge. Kinetic energy and momentum. A picture of the actual arrow, to scale.

I built it this way because the arrow is a system, not a parts list. Add 50 grains of point up front to hit an FOC number and you just weakened your spine, slowed the arrow, and steepened your drop at distance — three consequences from one decision, and a parts picker won't tell you about two of them. The Builder makes those trade-offs visible in real time, before you've spent a dollar or cut a shaft you can't un-cut.

For the short shot, the Builder is where you buy forgiveness on purpose: a little more FOC and a broadhead-friendly spine so a deer that ducks the string still catches an arrow that flies where you're pointing. For the long send, it's where you chase the opposite — a flat, heavy-enough, high-momentum build that holds its line in wind and doesn't fall out of the sky at 90. Same tool, two completely different arrows, and you can see exactly what you're trading for what as you slide each number.

Best way to benefit: build the arrow you already shoot first. Punch in your real setup and look at the numbers you've never actually seen — your true FOC, your real dynamic spine. Nine times out of ten there's a surprise in there, and that surprise is usually the reason your broadheads don't group with your field points.

Spine — the engine nobody else shows you

Spine is the single most misunderstood number in arrow building, so I gave it its own tool instead of burying it. The Spine tab shows you dynamic spine — not the static number printed on the shaft, but how much that shaft actually flexes and recovers off your bow, with your point weight, at your arrow length. Change any input and watch the effective spine move.

The reason it's a standalone tool is that spine has more moving parts than people realize, and most charts hide all of them. Arrow length changes it (a longer arrow is a longer lever — it bends more). Point weight changes it, about twice as hard as weight in the back. Internal footing and a collar stiffen it by shortening the flexing section, not just by adding grams. Even how aggressive your cam is — your bow's IBO speed — shifts which chart column you land in. The Forge rolls all of that into one honest number and checks it against the Easton and Victory grids, cell by cell. Where this earns its keep is the long shot. At 25 yards a slightly-off spine will still kill; the arrow recovers before it matters. At 90 yards that same small mismatch has the whole flight to plane sideways, and it will absolutely open your groups. If you shoot far, the Spine tab is where you stop guessing and start matching. Run the what-if slider — try a heavier point, a shorter cut, a stiffer shaft — and find the combination that reads dead center, then go build that.

Recommender — the arrow, working backwards

The Builder assumes you know what shaft you want. The Recommender is for when you don't. You give it your bow and your goal — hunting, target, max forgiveness, flattest trajectory — and it hands you the top five arrows for that job, ranked, out of the whole catalog. It's the Builder run in reverse: instead of build-then-check, it's tell-me-what-you-want-then-build.

I built it because "what arrow should I shoot?" is the most common question I get, and the honest answer depends on a dozen things a beginner hasn't measured yet. The Recommender does the sweep for you — it builds hundreds of candidate arrows in the background, spine-checks every one against your bow, and surfaces the handful that actually fit, so you're choosing between five good answers instead of drowning in a catalog.

For a short-range hunting rig it'll lean toward forgiveness and a spine that eats broadheads. Tell it you want to reach out and it flips — flatter, faster, tuned to hold up downrange. Beginner move that works: run it twice, once for "hunting" and once for "target/long range," and look at how different the two lists are. That contrast teaches you more about arrow selection in thirty seconds than a week of forum reading.

Chrono — the one measured number that fixes everything

Every tool above works off estimates until you feed it the truth, and the truth is your real arrow speed. The Chrono tab gets it three ways: import from a Garmin or LabRadar if you own one, type in a manual reading, or — the one I'm proudest of — use your phone's microphone as a chronograph, no hardware at all. It listens to the shot and the impact and does the math.

Here's why a measured speed matters so much: every estimate in ballistics compounds. A published IBO speed assumes a test arrow you're not shooting and a draw length you don't have. Guess your speed and you've poisoned your trajectory, your kinetic energy, your sight marks — everything downstream inherits the error. Measure it once and all of it snaps into focus. That's why the Chrono tab sits right in the middle of the workflow instead of off in a corner: it's the input that turns the rest of The Forge from "pretty close" into "dialed."

For the short shot, honestly, a few fps of error won't cost you a deer at 20. But for the long send it's everything. At 100 yards, being 8 fps off in your assumed speed can move your point of impact more than the vitals are wide. You cannot true a long-range sight tape on a guessed number. Shoot five arrows over the phone chrono, take the average, and feed it in — that one measurement is the difference between a sight tape that works at distance and one that lies to you exactly where it matters most.

Sight Tape — the whole point of shooting far

This is the tool that made me build the whole app, and it's the one long-range shooters live in. The Sight Tape tab takes your measured speed and your sight geometry and prints a precision tape — a real, to-scale strip you cut out and wrap on your sight so your marks are dead-on from your first pin all the way out to wherever you're brave enough to shoot. Per-yard marks. Dialed for your altitude and conditions. Ready to print.

I built it because truing a sight tape by hand is miserable and slow — you shoot, you adjust, you shoot again, you burn a whole range session and an afternoon of daylight to get marks that are still a little off past 60. The Forge does the ballistics for you, so instead of chasing marks all day you print a tape that's already right, then confirm a couple of distances and go. It turns a weekend project into an afternoon.

For a short-range fixed-pin hunter this tab matters less — your pins are your pins. But if you spin a dial and shoot past 50, this is the beating heart of the whole thing. Gang-print several tapes on one sheet if you're testing arrows against each other. And when you build a new arrow, come straight back here and reprint — a heavier point or a different vane changes your speed, which changes your marks, and the tape is only as honest as the chrono number behind it. That's the loop: build, chrono, tape, verify. Long-range accuracy lives in that loop.

Shot Solver — the field, with the physics still on

The tape gets you honest marks on flat ground in known conditions. The Shot Solver is for everything the field throws at you on top of that: an uphill or downhill angle, a crosswind, thin mountain air, a shot from 18 feet up a tree. You give it the situation and it gives you the actual hold — the corrected distance to aim, the wind hold-off, the entry-and-exit line through the animal.

I built it because the two shots I care about both break the flat-ground assumption, in opposite directions. The short shot breaks it vertically: from a treestand, a broadside deer at 15 yards is a steep downhill angle, and "behind the shoulder" from up in a tree is a wounding shot — your arrow has to enter high and exit low, and the aiming point crawls as the deer gets closer to your tree. The Solver's treestand view draws that line for you so you're not doing trigonometry with a buck in the lane. Two minutes with it before your first sit does more for your recovery rate than any broadhead.

The long shot breaks the assumption horizontally and atmospherically. At distance, wind is the whole game — a shot you can make on a calm morning is a coin flip in a 10 mph crosswind, and the Solver tells you exactly how much to hold. Density altitude matters too: your marks trued at sea level lie to you at 8,000 feet, and it corrects for that. Feed it the wind and the angle and the air, trust the hold, and you'll make shots that felt like luck before. Best habit: run the extreme case at home. Punch in the steepest angle and the worst wind you'd ever take, see the hold, and decide in the living room what your limit is — not with the shot in front of you.

Range — the feedback loop that makes you better

The last tool isn't about the arrow at all. It's about you. The Range tab is a logbook: every session, every distance, your groups, your personal bests, your streaks. It watches your data and tells you what to work on next — where you're leaking accuracy, which distance is dragging your average, whether that new arrow actually shoots better or just feels like it does.

I built it because gear is only half the honesty, and it's the easy half. The Forge can hand you a perfectly-tuned arrow and a dead-on sight tape, and you can still miss because you dropped your bow arm or rushed the shot. The Range tab closes that loop — it's the difference between "I think I'm shooting well" and knowing, with a season of data behind it. It'll also settle arrow arguments objectively: shoot build A and build B head to head, log both, and let the numbers pick the winner instead of your gut.

For the short shot, log under pressure — a shot clock, one arrow, cold. That's the shot you'll get on a deer, so practice grading it. For the long game, the Range tab is where confidence is actually built: watch your 80-yard groups tighten week over week and you'll take a shot in the field you'd never have trusted before, because now you've got the receipts. That earned confidence, backed by data, is the whole reason to shoot far in the first place.

How they fit together

None of these tools is an island — that's the design. The Builder and Recommender get you an arrow. The Spine tab makes sure it actually fits your bow. The Chrono feeds every calculation the one number it can't guess. The Sight Tape turns that number into marks, the Shot Solver turns the marks into a field-ready hold, and the Range tab tells you whether all of it is working. Build, verify, measure, tape, solve, log — then loop back and do it again a little better.

Whether you're waiting on a buck at 20 or ranging steel at a hundred, the arrow that gets it done was built, checked, and trued long before you drew. That's what The Forge is for. Go build something, run it through the whole loop, and go shoot it.
