Recommended arrow spec for the Alpha AX-3

For a 70 lb / 29" hunter: target a 300 spine shaft in 5mm (.204) or 6.5mm (.246) ID, cut 1.5" shorter than draw length. The AX-3's 343 IBO is slightly hotter than the ARC 30 — expect to lean a touch stiffer on spine if you push to 75+ lb draw.

Hoyt's classic short-brace geometry rewards a clean release, so don't undervane it: 2.0–2.5" vanes minimum for fixed broadheads, 1.85" for mechanicals.

  • Shaft: Easton 5mm Axis (.234 ID), Black Eagle Spartan, Victory RIP TKO (.204), Altra 204 Wasatch
  • Spine: 300 (60–75 lb), 250 (75–85 lb)
  • Point weight: 100–125 gr
  • Vanes: AAE Hybrid 23, AAE Hybrid 26 for tight fixed-blade flight

Why 343 IBO matters for spine selection

Three fps may not sound like much, but a 343 IBO bow stores measurably more energy than a 335 IBO at the same draw weight. That means the same 350-spine arrow that flies bullets out of a Bowtech Reckoning might paper-tune a tear out of an Alpha AX-3. Our builder bakes IBO into its spine recommendations.

Practical: if your AX-3 is at 70 lb / 29", a 340 spine works for 100 gr points but flexes too much at 125 gr. Step up to 300 spine when you push the point weight.

Tuning notes for the AX-3

Cam timing. Hoyt's HBX cams need timing within a couple of degrees — verify before paper tuning. A timing pin will show you instantly.

Center shot. Start at 13/16" from the riser face. The AX-3's RX-style limb pocket geometry is forgiving but a center-shot shift will show as left-right impact drift downrange.

Sight tape. With two chrono readings (launch + 60 yd) the Sight Tape generator gives you a printable tape calibrated to your exact velocity decay — way more accurate than ballistic calculators that assume a generic BC.
