Picking a Broadhead for the Animal, Not the Marketing

Walk into any pro shop the week before opener and look at the broadhead pegboard. Every package says the same four things. Devastating wound channel. Bone-crushing. Surgical. Blood trails a blind man could follow.

Not one of them tells you what animal it's for.

That's the whole problem. Broadheads get marketed like tires — bigger, tougher, wider, more aggressive — when they should get sold like ammunition. You don't shoot the same bullet at a prairie dog and a bull moose. Nobody argues about that. But we'll happily screw the same 2" mechanical onto every arrow in the quiver from turkey season through a September elk hunt and then blame our shot when something walks off.

I've got one rule that's held up across three continents and a lot of dead animals: the bigger the animal, the smaller the head I pick. The smaller the animal, the bigger the cut I go with.

Sounds backwards. It isn't.

Big animals get small heads

A big-bodied animal gives you two things a whitetail doesn't. Thicker hide, denser bone, and a lot more tissue between the entry hole and the far lung. It also gives you a target the size of a garbage can lid. You do not need a wider hole to find the vitals on an eland. You need the arrow to come out the other side.

Every fraction of an inch of cutting diameter is drag. Every moving part is a place to lose energy. On my eland I ran a 500-grain arrow with a narrow single-bevel and it passed through both lungs and buried in the dirt behind him. Same arrow with a 2.3" mechanical? Maybe it works. Maybe a rib catches a blade and you've got a one-lung animal and a five-hour tracking job in country where the sun sets on a schedule.

Elk is where I get the most argument. I rarely build an elk setup above a 125-grain point, and every elk arrow I personally shoot runs a 100. The whole Ashby church is going to tell you that's suicide. With today's bows and a 400–500 grain arrow that's actually tuned, you can kill everything up to a moose. Placement is the variable that matters. Weight is the variable everyone hides behind because it's the one you can buy.

Bears are the exception that proves the rule. Big animal, soft animal. Almost no bone in the way if you put it forward of the middle instead of aiming for the crease you'd use on a deer. I'll go wider on a bear than I will on a bull.

Small animals get big holes

Now flip it. A whitetail doe at 22 yards from a saddle isn't a penetration problem. Your bow will drive a broadhead through both sides of that deer with weight to spare. What you actually own is a blood trail problem — a smaller animal, less tissue damage per inch of hole, and a leaf-covered floor at last light.

So go wide. Bowmar Beast 2.3 with the LUTZ blades is on most of my whitetail arrows. Speed Titanium 100 — different company than Bowmar, don't conflate them, Grade 5 titanium ferrule and a 2" cut — is the other one I keep reaching for. If you want a hybrid, the Evolution Hyde puts a fixed blade out front with a 2" mechanical behind it and gives you the best of both arguments.

Mega Meat has a place too, and the place is a treestand inside 25 yards. It does not fly well past that. Know what you bought.

What's on the package that you should ignore

Vents. Every vented broadhead I've shot is loud, and a whitetail in October is already standing there with its nerves wired to the safety on a fire alarm. You spent $1,400 on a bow marketed as quiet and then bolted a whistle to the front of your arrow. Skip them.

Bands and rubber retention. A SEVR almost cost me a giant nyala because it didn't deploy, and when it did the bands were eating penetration on the way in. I don't run anything whose function depends on a rubber part surviving a quiver, a truck, and eleven days of Africa heat.

Montec. Nothing wrong with the geometry, it's just 2006 and no serious hunter is picking one today with what else is on the shelf.

And ignore the grain number on the box entirely until you've decided the animal and the cut. Point weight is a tuning input, not a lethality input. Going from 100 to 125 grains up front weakens your arrow's dynamic spine by roughly a spine step and drops you around 10 fps. That's a real cost, and you pay it whether or not you needed the weight.

Do this before you buy

Pick the animal. Pick the head from the two shelves above — narrow and fixed for anything big, wide for anything the size of a deer or smaller. Then figure out what that head does to the arrow you already tuned.

That last part is the one people skip, and it's the reason broadheads get blamed for bad flight that was actually a spine problem. Drop your current build into The Forge and swap the head. The Penetration Index will grade what that combination will actually do on the far side of a rib, and the spine gauge will tell you whether you just softened your arrow into the next band. Both numbers in about ninety seconds, before you've spent $45 on a three-pack.

Then go shoot the head you're going to hunt with. All season. Not just the week before opener.
