The Mechanical vs Fixed Debate Is Mostly Wrong

Every August the same thread shows up. Somebody asks mechanical or fixed, and by page three one camp has decided mechanicals are unethical and the other camp has decided fixed heads plane so badly nobody can hold a group past forty. Both sides think they're arguing about broadheads.

They're not. They're arguing about tune. Neither of them knows it.

I shoot both. Some seasons in the same week. Which head goes on the front of the arrow has almost nothing to do with the category it falls into and almost everything to do with what I'm hunting, how far the shot is likely to be, and whether the bow is honest out to that distance.

Fixed heads don't plane. Untuned bows plane.

A guy brought me a bow last September, third week of the month, panicking. He'd bought a pack of Iron Will Wides on a buddy's recommendation and they were landing eight inches left of his field points at forty yards. His conclusion was that fixed heads can't handle modern speed and he needed to switch to mechanicals before opening day.

His rest was about 3/32 outside of center and his top cam was rolling over roughly a quarter turn early. That bow had been shooting field points fine for two seasons because a field point doesn't care. It has no surface area to steer with. It'll eat a bad launch and still punch the middle at twenty.

Bolt an inch and a half of steel to the front of that same arrow and you've built a lever. Whatever the shaft was already doing coming off the string, the broadhead now amplifies. It isn't the head misbehaving. The head is a witness.

Thirty minutes on the draw board, a cam sync, a center shot reset, and the same heads off the same arrows closed to field point impact. He shot that pack all season.

So before you blame a piece of machined steel, bareshaft at sixty or seventy yards. Twenty yards will lie to you. A bareshaft that hits with your fletched arrows at seventy is a bow that will shoot any fixed head made. If yours won't get there, the fix is upstream: spine, rest position, cam timing. That's what the spine and tuning tools in The Forge exist to sort out, and it takes about four minutes to find out whether your build is even in the right neighborhood.

Mechanicals don't fail. Mechanisms fail.

I've had it go the other way too. A nyala in South Africa, big one, quartering away at thirty. The arrow went through him like a field point with a nose cone on it. The blades never opened. That was a SEVR, and it's the reason SEVR is on my permanent no list. Anything that leans on a rubber band to hold blades closed is asking a piece of rubber to behave the same in ninety-degree African heat, in a Wisconsin December, and after it's been buried in a quiver bumping against a tree for six days. It won't.

Bands also steal penetration on the way in. You're paying a tax to open the head, and you pay it right at the moment the arrow has the most work left to do.

The mechanicals I trust solved deployment with geometry instead of rubber. Bowmar Beast 2.3 with the E.P.I.C. system and 7075 ferrule. Speed Titanium 100 out of Speed Broadheads, Grade 5 titanium, two-inch cut, piston-driven. Evolution Hyde if you want a fixed front blade doing the entry work with a two-inch mechanical behind it. Those heads open because the physics of the impact makes them open, not because something let go.

That's the honest version of the debate. Not mechanical versus fixed. Well-engineered versus gimmick.

Pick for the animal, not the category

My rule runs backwards from what most guys expect. The bigger the animal, the smaller the head I pick. The smaller the animal, the more cutting diameter I want.

Whitetail inside forty in a stand, tuned bow: I'm reaching for a Bowmar Beast 2.3 or a Speed Titanium 100. You're not fighting bone you can't get through. You want hole and you want blood on the ground where you can see it in low light.

Elk: Iron Will Wide, Bowmar Beast Titanium, or an Annihilator. I've shot Annihilators on dozens of animals, somewhere close to triple digits, and I've never had one break and never had one that didn't put the animal down inside forty yards. Toulou makes a single-bevel S7 tool steel head that belongs in that conversation too.

Here's where I fall out with the internet. I almost never build an elk arrow above a 125 grain point, and every elk arrow I personally shoot wears a 100. A 400 to 500 grain arrow out of a current bow kills everything on this continent up to and including moose. The heavy-FOC crowd will tell you otherwise and I've read the same studies they have. Placement is doing the work. It always was.

Bears look like the animal that demands the heaviest setup and they're the opposite. Big, but soft. Aim forward of where you think you should and you're in tissue, not structure.

Two other things. Mega Meat is a great twenty-yard head out of a stand or a blind and it does not fly at distance, so don't ask it to. And skip vented broadheads entirely. They whistle, and a whitetail in late October is already looking for a reason.

What to actually do about it

Stop asking which category is better and start asking whether your arrow is arriving with enough left in it. That's a number, not an opinion. Build your setup in The Forge and run the Penetration Index on it. It'll tell you what your arrow is carrying at the range you actually hunt, and whether the head you're about to buy is a reasonable ask.

Then bareshaft it at seventy. If it flies, shoot whatever head you want. That's the entire debate.
