Paper Tuning Is the Last Step, Not the First

Every new bow that comes through my shop, the owner asks the same thing before it's out of the box. "Can we paper tune it?"

No. Not yet. Ask me again in an hour.

Paper is where most guys start and it's exactly backwards. A paper tear is a report card. It tells you how the arrow left the bow. It doesn't tell you why, and it can't fix anything. If you start at the paper rack with a bow whose cams are out of sync and whose rest is a quarter inch off center, you'll chase that tear for two evenings, move the rest six times, twist the yoke, and end up with a bullet hole that's a lie. The bow will be tuned to the paper. It won't be tuned.

What a tear can and can't tell you

A tear shows you the sum of everything wrong, mashed into one shape. Nock high could be cam timing. Could be a rest sitting a hair low. Could be your D-loop pinching the nock. Could be contact with the launcher. Could be you, torquing the grip because the new bow's throat feels different than your old one. Paper gives you one tear and five suspects.

Which is fine at the end. At the end you've already cleared four of the five. At the start you've cleared none and you're guessing.

My buddy Cody spent a whole Sunday on this last spring with a new Mathews Lift. Left tear, three inches at six feet. He moved the rest in. Tear got smaller. Moved it more. Bullet hole. Proud as hell, texted me a photo. Then he shot it at 40 and his groups were a foot wide and his broadheads were four inches left of field points. The bow had a cable-driven rest with the timing set so the launcher was still coming up when the arrow left. Center shot was now something like 9/16" off because he'd walked it in to cover a timing problem. One bullet hole, two real defects, and the paper said everything was fine.

That's the trap. Paper can be made to lie by moving the wrong thing.

The order that works

I've written the full sequence up before, and if you want the whole bench workflow it's in the 90-minute tune post. Short version for today:

Cams first. Draw board or a buddy holding it at full draw while you look at the stops. If the timing is off, nothing after this matters, because every tear you get is a timing tear wearing a costume.

Then the mechanical setup. Center shot to the manufacturer number, not to feel. Nock height at square or a hair above. Rest timing if it's cable-driven. Peep, loop, done. This is all stuff you measure. None of it involves shooting.

Then bareshafts. This is where I'd argue the real tuning happens and it's the step people skip to get to the paper faster. A bareshaft at 20 and then at 40 tells you what the arrow's doing over distance, not over six feet. It exposes spine. Paper doesn't, or not reliably. A shaft that's 30 grains too weak will punch a decent hole at six feet because the vanes haven't had time to do anything yet. Push it to 40 and the bareshaft is nock-left and low and your fletched arrows are opening up. I've said it before: the bareshaft test I trust runs out past 30.

And then, last, paper. You already know the bow is right. Now you're just confirming the arrow leaves clean before you screw on broadheads. If you get a tear at this point, it's small, and the list of suspects is short. Usually it's you.

Paper is a verification, not a diagnosis

Think about it the way a mechanic thinks about a test drive. You don't drive the truck around the block to figure out what's wrong and then start swapping parts based on the noise. You check the obvious stuff first, fix what you can see, and the drive at the end tells you whether you're done.

That's paper. It's the drive at the end.

There's a second reason I hold paper to the end and it's less about tuning and more about people. Guys get attached to the bullet hole. It's a satisfying thing to look at. Once they have it, they don't want to touch the bow again, so anything that shows up later at distance gets blamed on form or wind or the arrows. The bullet hole becomes evidence that the bow is fine. I've had customers argue with a 40-yard bareshaft because the paper said otherwise last week. The paper was six feet away and the bareshaft was 120 feet away. Trust the one that had time to tell the truth.

Where I'll contradict myself: if a bow was tuned last year and I've changed nothing, I'll shoot one arrow through paper to confirm nothing walked over the winter. That's a legitimate use of paper as a first step. But the bow's been through the full sequence before. Paper as a check on a known-good setup is fine. Paper as a diagnosis on an unknown one is how you end up like Cody.

One more thing about spine

The cheapest tune in the world is starting with the right arrow. About a third of the "won't tune" bows I see have a shaft that's a spine group off for the point weight the guy is running, and no amount of rest adjustment fixes an arrow that's bending wrong. That's the real reason bareshafts come before paper. They tell you if the arrow is even a candidate.

Before your next tune, run your build through The Forge. Put in your actual point weight, your actual cut length, and your bow, and let the spine check tell you if you're in the window before you start moving anything on the bow. Then do the sequence. Cams, setup, bareshafts. And when you finally get to the paper, shoot three, look at the tear, and go hunt.
