Rut Data Sources — Every Region, Its Agency and Its Confidence Grade
The short answer. The Hunt carries 37 rut regions built from state agency breeding-chronology data, covering five states that actually publish it — Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Arkansas — plus two elk regions. Everywhere else in the whitetail range it applies a stated photoperiod default rather than inventing a local number. Every region carries a confidence grade, and the app shows you which one you are reading.
Most rut forecasts do not tell you where their dates came from. This one does, because in almost every case the honest answer is more complicated than a date. Here is the whole catalogue.

What the grades mean
The grade describes the strength of the basis, not how tidy the number looks. A C is not a guess — it is usually a real agency map that was published as a picture instead of a table.

The rule we hold ourselves to is exact, and it is the reason most of this catalogue is graded C. We may write: our reading of Alabama's 2022 rut map puts Dallas County in the 9–24 January band. We may never write: Alabama's agency says Dallas County peaks on 17 January. The agency published a picture with a legend, not a per-county figure. Everyone else quotes the second sentence. The difference between those two sentences is the difference between a source and a guess.
Breeding date is not the date you hunt
Agencies measure conception, because that is what fetal aging recovers. What you actually want to know is when bucks are on their feet, and that runs 7 to 14 days earlier. Louisiana's LDWF publishes that lead, and we apply it to every region in the catalogue rather than shifting different states by different amounts to make the answers look better. The stored data is always the measured breeding date; the movement window is derived from it, in one place, by one rule.
The photoperiod default, and why we are comfortable with it
Outside the Deep South and the Texas brush country, whitetail breeding is driven overwhelmingly by decreasing daylength rather than by local geography — which is why the window barely moves from year to year across the northern and midwestern range. The clearest confirming data point is a Wisconsin GPS-collar study, n = 188, which found peak movement landing 4–8 November every single year, regardless of weather or moon phase.
That is a well-supported regional default. It is not a measurement of your county, and we grade it C and say so on every page that uses it. It is also why we are sceptical of lunar rut forecasting: the same study that pins the dates found the moon did not move them.
Rut timing by state
There is a page per state — thirty-seven of them — each stating whether that state publishes its own breeding-chronology data or takes the photoperiod default, and each showing its confidence grade. They are linked from The Hunt; start there rather than from a list repeated here.
States absent from that set are absent deliberately. Alaska and Hawaii have no whitetail. Arizona, California, Idaho, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah and Washington are mule deer and blacktail country, where a whitetail photoperiod default would be the wrong model rather than an imprecise one. Florida, Georgia and South Carolina do have publishable agency data and are next.

Common questions
How many states does The Hunt have real rut data for?
Five, and we name them: Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Arkansas. Those are the only state wildlife agencies that publish a breeding-chronology product we can read. Together they give 35 whitetail regions. Everywhere else in the whitetail range we apply a stated photoperiod default rather than inventing a state-specific number nobody measured, and the app says which one you are looking at.
What is the difference between peak breeding and peak movement?
Peak breeding is the conception window, and it is the thing agencies actually measure by fetal aging. Peak movement is when bucks are on their feet, and it runs roughly 7 to 14 days earlier. Louisiana's LDWF publishes that lead, and we apply it consistently to every region in the catalogue rather than shifting different states by different amounts. The stored data is always the measured breeding date; the movement window is derived from it.
Why is most of the rut data graded C?
Because of how it is published, not because we doubt it. No state agency publishes breeding chronology as a table. Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and Arkansas each publish a single flat raster image with a legend, so every county assignment in those states was reconstructed by classifying that image against its legend. That is our reading of their map, and the grade says so. Texas is the exception: it published an ecoregion table, which is why Texas carries B, and one Texas region carries A because a peer-reviewed study covers it.
What does the photoperiod default assume?
That outside the Deep South and the Texas brush country, whitetail breeding is driven overwhelmingly by decreasing daylength rather than local geography, so the window barely moves year to year. The clearest confirming data point is a Wisconsin GPS-collar study, n = 188, which found peak movement landing 4 to 8 November every single year regardless of weather or moon phase. We publish that as a regional default at confidence C, never as a state measurement.
Does the moon affect the rut?
Not in the data we can find. The Wisconsin collar study above found peak movement on the same early-November dates every year irrespective of moon phase. Photoperiod sets the breeding window; weather moves daytime activity within it. We would rather tell you that than sell a lunar forecast.
Can I trust a county-level rut date you show me?
Trust it to the grade printed next to it, and no further. The rule we hold ourselves to is exact: we may write that our reading of Alabama's 2022 rut map puts a given county in the 9–24 January band. We may never write that Alabama's agency says that county peaks on 17 January. The agency published a picture, not a number, and the difference between those two sentences is the whole difference between a source and a guess.
If a number here is wrong, it is wrong in a way you can check: the source is named, the method is stated, and the ones that are ours carry our name and not somebody else's.
