It found peaks ranging from Sep 30 on the northern Gulf Prairies to Dec 24 in western South Texas, roughly a 12-week spread across the state. That is a real, published, ecoregion-level dataset — but it is not a statewide date, and it is not peer-reviewed.
Three corrections to what circulates online
1. TPWD never sampled the High Plains (Panhandle), Blackland Prairies, Oak Woods & Prairies. The "Panhandle ~Nov 20" figure that circulates on hunting forums is bleed-over from the Rolling Plains South study area — it is not a Panhandle number and TPWD has never published one. We return no data for these regions rather than interpolate a figure nobody measured.
2. South Texas splits east/west, not north/south — East Dec 16, West Dec 24.
3. A widely reprinted version of this table (the Victoria Advocate version) has a transcription error, listing Rolling Plains South as "Nov 2" instead of the correct Nov 20. Always cite TPWD directly.
